Will Gold Return to $5,000?

gold rocket on rising market chart

Updated October 29, 2026. This article originally asked whether gold would hit $4,000 an ounce in 2025. It did, on October 8, 2025. Gold went on to pass $5,000 in January 2026 before pulling back sharply. We’ve rewritten this post to cover what drove the rally, why prices fell, and what analysts expect for 2027.

TL;DR: Gold’s Wild Ride

  • Gold crossed $5,000 an ounce for the first time on January 26, 2026,² and reached a record near $5,600 before falling about 24%.³ In late October 2026, it is struggling to hold the $4,000 level.⁴
  • Several major research firms still expect gold to return to $5,000 or higher in 2027. Most have pushed back their timelines because of rising interest rates and the war in Iran.

How Gold Went From $4,000 to $5,000

Gold rose about 64% in 2025.² It set 53 record highs that year, and investors put a record $89 billion into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to the World Gold Council.⁵

The run carried into January 2026. Gold gained more than 15% in the first weeks of the year as geopolitical tensions, including events involving Iran and Venezuela, pushed investors toward safe-haven assets.² Questions about the Federal Reserve’s independence added to that demand.⁵

Central bank buying was the steady force underneath it all. Many central banks have been adding gold to diversify their reserves away from U.S. dollar assets.³

Why Gold Prices Dropped

After peaking in January, gold fell to about $4,000 by late June, recovered toward $4,400 over the summer, then slid again in September.³ Several pressures stacked up:

Competition for investment money. Investors have been putting money into stocks, cryptocurrencies, energy, and other commodities instead.⁶

War and energy prices. The conflict in Iran and disruptions to oil shipments have pushed energy prices and inflation higher.⁷ That forced the Federal Reserve into a more restrictive stance.³

Rate hikes. The Fed raised rates by a quarter point in September, and gold fell 6.3% that month.⁴ Markets now see a better than 80% chance of another hike in December.⁴

Higher yields and a stronger dollar. The 10-year Treasury yield moved above 5%,³ and the dollar reached a two-month high.⁴ Gold pays no interest, so higher yields raise the cost of holding it.

What’s Still Supporting Gold

Even with those headwinds, demand has held up better than many expected.

  • Central banks bought 345 tonnes of gold in the first half of 2026, including 289 tonnes in the second quarter alone.³
  • Global gold ETFs took in a record $30.7 billion in the third quarter.³ U.S.-listed gold ETFs added $11.7 billion over the same period, even as prices fell.⁴
  • Investors bought 784 tonnes of gold bars and coins in the first half of the year, one of the strongest first halves on record.³
  • Mine production is expected to grow only about 1% a year, limiting new supply.³

Matthew Piggott of Metals Focus noted that institutional buyers have consistently stepped in as prices approach $4,000, adding that “the bottom hasn’t fallen out of gold.”⁶

What Analysts Expect for 2027

Forecasts are opinions, not guarantees. Several of these firms cut their numbers in the last few months, and they could change again.

What Would Need to Happen for Gold to Reach $5,000 Again?

Analysts point to a few conditions:

  1. Calmer energy markets. Piggott said inflation pressure won’t ease until something changes on the energy side.⁶
  2. A pause or reversal from the Fed. CIBC noted that real interest rates below 2% have historically supported gold.³ Chris Mancini of Gabelli said a weak jobs report could quickly shift expectations.⁷
  3. Investors coming back. Metals Focus says a renewed rally depends on investment demand returning.⁶
  4. Steady central bank buying. Metals Focus expects central banks to remain substantial net buyers in 2027.⁶

The risks run the other way, too. More rate hikes, a renewed escalation in the Middle East, or a sustained drop below $4,000 could delay any recovery.⁴ ⁶

What About Silver?

Silver followed a similar path, topping $120 an ounce in January before falling back.⁶ Metals Focus expects silver to average $84.40 in 2027 and rise above $90 late in the year, driven mainly by investors rather than industrial demand.⁶ For more, see What Influences Silver Prices.
