Chain Links

If your Tiffany and Co. jewelry have a chain like the one above, be sure to closely inspect the links. An authentic Tiffany and Co. chain will have no gaps in-between the links. Another way to confirm that your piece is authentic is to inspect the solder joints on the links. As you can see on the fake above, the links will not be soldered cleanly.

Centered Text

The text on a piece of Tiffany & Co. jewelry will always be centered and not up against the edge. Looking at the examples above, you can see that the counterfeit piece has text that is right on the edge.

Stamps

On a genuine piece of Tiffany & Co. jewelry, the 1837 stamp will be clean with the numbers evenly spaced and straight up and down. Another way to identify a fake is by looking at the number 8. On a real piece, the center line will cleanly pass through, and the center of the fake number 8 will not be clear. You will also notice that the 8, 3, and 7 are stamped at an angle. The lines around 1837 should also be clean and not jagged.

Discoloration

Genuine Tiffany & Co. jewelry will not have any copper coloring. In the examples, you can see some copper coloring in the lettering because the stamping has gone through the silver plating on the pieces.

Upon general inspection, the stamps on the piece above look good. However, once you flip the piece over you can see the discoloration that would not be present on real silver. The piece above turned out to be fake and composed of mostly nickel.

Laser Engraving

In 2004, Tiffany & Co. began laser engraving their diamonds with a serial number. The serial number will be visible when inspecting the diamond with a loop. Do not rely on the diamond’s setting as an indication of its authenticity. Tiffany & Co. prides itself on providing beautifully cut diamonds. These diamonds sell for much more than unbranded diamonds. Many counterfeiters will use a real Tiffany & Co. setting but swap out the diamond with a lower-quality diamond.
